John graduated from Sussex University with a BSc (Hons) degree in Neurobiology in 1979 and subsequently obtained his PhD from the University of Nottingham in 1984 after specialising in the area of cellular Neuropharmacology. He moved to The University of Dundee in 1984, initially as a post-doctoral fellow and remained there for the remainder of his career advancing to Professor of Pharmacology in 2003 and retiring as Professor Emeritus in 2021. John’s research interests throughout his career focussed upon the pharmacology of ligand-gated ion channels, particularly the 5-HT3and GABA¬ receptor families, studied by electrophysiological and molecular biological techniques. John has served as a member of council of the BPS and acted as editor of the BPS Concise Guide to Pharmacology. He is a joint recipient on the Sandoz (now Novartis) and Rang Prizes of the Society and also serves as a member of NC-IUPHAR.John has enjoyed teaching students of Pharmacology, Biomedical Sciences, Medicine and Dentistry over many years and has received numerous awards in a teaching capacity that culminated in the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching from the University of Dundee in 2019.
